24/7 Chicago recently chatted with Michael Phelps at an exclusive autograph signing sponsored by PureSport at Chicago Sports Authority in Hoffman Estates. The greatest Olympian ever has has won more gold medals than any other person in history. He's also helping with the effort to bring the Olympics to Chicago in 2016.
It's no secret that US Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Aaron Peirsol has a deep love for the water. That's why the California native has parlayed his interest — and status as a sports figure — into causes to save our planet's oceans. In a recent article with Today, he talks about environmental awareness, education, and his most recent project, Race for the Oceans.

More than 1500 fans turned out to meet the eight-time gold medal winner in Chicago, but the story here is that Michael Phelps signed on to promote a relatively small brand instead of a category standard-bearer like Gatorade.
Michael Phelps has already appeared in a number of promotions not typical of Olympians – like Frosted Flakes, AT&T Wireless internet connection cards and Rosetta Stone language learning software. Phelps said he personally used Rosetta Stone to learn Chinese prior to the Beijing Olympics, and said in PureSport’s promotional material that he trained for his epic run using PureSport products.
“I signed on with HPL PureSport because their drinks taste great and they work,” Phelps said. “PureSport helps me with my workouts and performance and allows me to recover without soreness; it’s legal and clean.”

Recently, Team PureSport member Michael Phelps spoke with Mens Fitness Magazine about PureSport - here is an excerpt:
When you're competing, how grueling are those one to two minutes. Does that factor into needing extra calories?
"PureSport [performance sports drink] really helps me. I was able to get it into my system and recover much faster. Recovery is such a big thing for me, especially when I'm doing a program like that because I have to be ready at every single one of my races to be at my best.
What other supplements do you use?
Really not much. I had tried other things, but when you think of a recovery drink, you think of something that's usually a milk-based protein product. But when you're competing in 17 or 18 races in eight or nine days, it's tough to put a milk product into your system and then turn around 20 minutes later and go swim.
Michael Phelps stopped by Fast Company's offices in downtown Manhattan recently to discuss his partnership with the PureSport Workout and Recovery Sports Drinks with Protein and what it's like to become an overnight iconic brand.
He arrived with Blackberry and sunglasses in hand (before shuffling off to MTV's TRL), along with an entourage from HPL-PureSport, doing his best to talk business. Check out Fast Company's interview with Phelps to hear about his approach to his personal brand.

...Nastia Liukin won the Women's Sports Foundation's 2008 Sportswoman of the Year Award on Tuesday, making her, in at least one way, the "next Mary Lou." Mary Lou Retton had been the last gymnast to be so honored and the sport has been on a quest since 1984 to find the next Retton, a perky pixie who could have cross-over appeal for advertisers especially, but also for sports fans.
Jessica Mendoza of Camarillo, who was a part of the silver-medal U.S. Olympic softball team, was named Sportswoman of the Year for team athletes at the dinner in New York at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel
Liukin won five Olympic gymnastics medals in Beijing including the most important -- the all-around gold medal. In winning, Liukin not only beat the tiny Chinese contingent that set the world wondering exactly how old they were but also her favored teammate, Shawn Johnson, who won all-around silver and settled for gold only on the balance beam on the last night of competition.
